The new IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi is located in the EXPO area of Milan. It is Italy’s first modern hospital developed in height and the first major intervention to transform the spaces of the 2015 universal exposition into the new science park.
The total area covered by the new hospital hub, financed by the San Donato Hospital Group, is about 50,000 square meters, has a height development of 16 floors and efficiently and sustainably accommodates about 9,000 people per day including patients, faculty and students.
The hospital complex has nine non-accessible flat roofs that have been remodeled into intensive green roofs. The roofs differ in substrate thickness and tree species, which are: rustic meadow, natural flowering meadow, and shrubby and grassy ground cover.
The reception and classrooms overlook a slab patio designed by architect Massimo Semola. The space features large aluminum pots that accommodated the reduced substrate thickness by allowing the inclusion of Japanese maples.
